A friend told me to try mediation for my divorce, what do they mean? – Tom from Santa Fe
Mediation is a process that allows you and your spouse to create your own divorce settlement with the assistance of a neutral third party. In simplest terms, you and your spouse decide what makes sense and what is fair for your situation. A mediator helps guide you through the decision making and helps you get through the rough spots. Mediators come from many backgrounds, including attorneys, financial professionals, mental health professionals, retired judges, and many more. The mediation process is voluntary, confidential, and you control the pace. Mediation is less expensive and more efficient that traditional divorce models. Once you have reached an agreement, you can either hire an attorney to file the papers for you or you can attempt to file them yourself with your county.
